BARRIO SONORO: A Global Sound Exploration in Berlin

Barrio Sonoro is a new concert series in Berlin that seeks to explore and showcase the rich tapestry of global popular music, with a particular focus on Latin American sonic traditions. Featuring artists from all corners of the world, all based in Berlin, the series offers an in-depth look at the musical heritage of regions such as the Caribbean, Venezuela, Brazil, Guinea Conakry, and beyond.

With an emphasis on popular music and the musical traditions that shape local scenes, Barrio Sonoro serves as both a forecast and a reflection of Berlin’s evolving artistic landscape. Through three dates and six distinct projects, this series brings forward the diverse influences and the interconnectedness of global rhythms, melodies, and cultural expressions.

The concerts will take place at Artspace in Exile - Hotel Continental, a space dedicated to fostering artistic and cultural exchange in times of displacement. This unique venue provides the ideal environment for an exploration of music’s ability to transcend borders and unite us through shared soundscapes.

DUO PIRAGUAS @cuatro_piraguas

What is usually the Cuatro Piraguas will be rowing to Berlin as the DUO PIRAGUAS for this first edition. They are understood as carriers of diverse melodies and rhythms of Latin America and the Caribbean, from the affection and respect towards their origins, looking for a link to our present. 

With a diverse repertoire that draws from the traditional music of Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil, the Duo Piraguas (canoes) invites you this time to embark on a sonorous journey through seas, rivers and mountains of Venezuela and Colombia. 

In their voyage, the varied songs will be accompanied by traditional instruments like the cuatro and the maracas, giving rise to warm and enchanting sounds that make us sing together, move our bodies and submerge ourselves in their rhythmic and melodious complexity.

LA CURA @lacuraberlin

"La Cura" is an Afro-Colombian band, founded in 2022 by Carolina Riaño (vocals/maracas), Dante Parraguez (tambor alegre) Daniel Cataño (tambora) and Leonor Mejía (llamador/maracas).
"La Cura" is the first Afro-Colombian band in Berlin that plays the music of the origins and oral tradition of the Colombian Caribbean, rhythms such as Bullerengue Sentao, Fandango, Chalupa, Cumbia and Tambora among others that represent the diversity of Colombian music. Sounds that are rooted in the drums and the breath in the female voices with joie de vivre and passion infect the audience and make everyone dance!
